Big Island Nature Park
One of the city’s largest parks is nested on the eastern section of Lake Minnetonka’s Big Island Nature Park and comprises of 56 acres of land. While many may think of boats, swimsuits and the fourth of July when Big Island is mentioned the city’s park represents something very different. A better description would be history, nature, and walking trails right in the middle of Lake Minnetonka. The park has walking trails and signage to telling the parks history keeping with the natural theme of the island.
Recently the Park Commission & Orono City Council added ADA accessible trails, signage telling the history of the island, bathrooms, and a shelter so more visitors could enjoy the island's natural beauty and lake.
Fast Facts:
- 56 acres with 75% of it being protected by a nature easement
- It has been home to many things: including an amusement park, game farm, & veterans camp
- Trails and bathrooms are there on the island for visitors to use during the day (no overnight camping)
